Castilian Heartlands

Around Central Spain

Castilian Heartlands is seven days rooted in Madrid and built around the places that shaped Spain’s political and cultural center. You’ll walk the walls of Ávila, stand beneath Segovia’s Roman aqueduct, move through the vast corridors of El Escorial, and climb into Toledo’s cathedral above the Tagus. Back in the capital, we spend real time inside the Prado and Reina Sofía, explore the Royal Palace, and end our nights the way Madrid does: over tapas, wine, and conversation. It’s a focused week through Castile’s core, balancing structure with space, history with daily life, and depth with enough freedom to actually enjoy where you are.

After settling in, enjoy a short orientation walk through central Madrid, passing plazas, boulevards, and neighborhoods that will anchor the week ahead. In the evening, gather for a welcome dinner. Your first shared table in Castile.

    Day 2 — Segovia & Ávila

Depart Madrid by private coach for a full day in two of Spain’s most historic towns. In Segovia, stand beneath the Roman aqueduct, explore the Alcázar, and move through the medieval center before lunch near Plaza Mayor. Continue to Ávila to walk atop its monumental medieval walls and take in the surrounding plains. Return to Madrid in the early evening. Dinner at leisure.

    Day 3 — El Escorial

Travel into the Guadarrama mountains to the Monastery of El Escorial, Spain’s great Renaissance complex. On a guided visit, explore the basilica, royal palace, pantheon, and corridors once occupied by kings and monks. Lunch in the village follows, with time to wander before returning to Madrid. Evening at leisure.

    Day 4 — Toledo & Flamenco

Take the morning train to Toledo, the hilltop city long shaped by Christian, Jewish, and Islamic influence. Walk from the station into the historic center and enter the Cathedral of Saint Mary on a guided visit. After lunch and free time, return to Madrid by train. In the evening, attend a live flamenco performance with dinner in an authentic tablao.

    Day 5 — Madrid’s Museums & Tapas Night

Spend the morning inside two of Europe’s great museums. Begin at the Prado, then continue to the Reina Sofía. After lunch, enjoy a free afternoon before heading out in the evening for a guided tapas experience through central Madrid.

    Day 6 — Royal Madrid

Explore the Royal Palace of Madrid on a guided visit through its ceremonial halls and chambers. Continue into the Sabatini Gardens before the afternoon opens for independent time: Retiro Park, Gran Vía, or simply rest. The evening is free.

    Day 7 — Departure

Breakfast at the hotel. Depart Madrid at your convenience. Airport transfers can be arranged upon request.

  • This tour involves daily walking, typically 2–4 miles per day, often on uneven stone streets, cobblestones, and historic stairways. Several sites include stairs and gradual inclines. In places like Toledo and Ávila, elevation changes are part of the experience.

The pace is steady but manageable, with regular breaks built into the schedule. Participants should be comfortable walking for extended periods and standing during guided visits.

Elevators are available at major museums and the Royal Palace, though access in historic towns can be limited. If you have specific mobility concerns, please contact us before booking so we can discuss whether this tour is the right fit.
